More Dog Bed Basics

We discussed the importance of dog bed quality in the last blog, so today we will discuss the different shapes.

*BOLSTER COUCH DOG BED

Basically there are two shapes: round dog beds or rectangular. Some of them also have bolsters for your dog to rest his head or to curl up against, which makes your dog more comfortable as he rests or sleeps. Some bolsters go around the entire bed, while other designs just have the bolster around three sides keeping one side as an easy entrance and exit to his bed.

A round bed is designed for the dog who like to curl up and sleep; a small dog would be the most likely to do this.

The larger dog would probably like the rectangular shaped dog bed so he can stretch out while sleeping. This shape is also ideal for their crate.

Some beds have the option of being heated. Different areas of the country experience cooler temperatures year around, while other areas just have cool temperatures during the winter months. Even during the summer, if you air condition your home, your dog my like a heated dog bed. Heated beds are an option – to heat or not to heat. You don’t have to have the heat on even if it is a heated bed.

Another thing to consider is the space you have to put his bed. Will you need more than one bed so they are always near you when you move from room to room? Will more than one pet be sleeping on the dog bed at the same time?

Your dog will love having his own space. Dog beds are their comfort space – secure and comfortable. Choose wisely. Get the best quality you can afford while considering their sleeping pattern, your floor space, and the number of pets that will use this bed. A dog’s life should be a good life!

Is Your Home Ready For A Dog?

Welcome back! I am always grateful you have come to see what I have written 

Oh, my, your family has just found the best dog ever! So cute, so lovable, so adorable! Everyone fell in love with her on first sight! This will be the best behaved dog ever! – and everyone will pitch in and help raise this new dog. The excitement is high and you have brought her home!

But wait! You are ready for the doggy, but is your house ready? Is your car ready for traveling with a dog?

Let’s talk a little about pre-planning preparations.  Planning ahead saves frustration. Quick, get the supplies so your doggy won’t develop unacceptable behavior.

Okay, so you are planning ahead, so what do you need?  I am sure that your friends and family members have already tried to help you by their suggestions also. If they have doggies in their home, listen to them. They are a great resource. Here are a few of my suggestions:

1. Preferably, you should have a car dog bed or dog booster seat in which they can travel. You could  use a corrugated box or some other container with something cushy in it like an old blanket or towel until you get something more permanent.
2. A crate in your home is necessary. I used to think a crate was cruel, but now I know that it is the best training tool for house breaking and sleeping. Using it as a punishment is, however, cruel! More on crate training in future blogs.
3. She will need dog  They need some kind of container for their food and water. And you need to get dog food. In my next blog, I will discuss dog food.
4. Let’s see, what next. How about a gate? This will help you keep a dog out of a baby’s room, getting into cat litter, or any area that you want to be off-limits for your dog.
5. A dog bed or several dog beds. You can have several around the house, but especially a comfortable one on the floor of her crate, and one where she can be in the room where you spend the most time – because she will want to be with you.
6. Get some dog chews. Give her something to chew on before she makes her own selection. Dogs will chew at any age, especially if they get bored, so be prepared.
7. How about getting a collar or harness, and a leash. Teach your dog when she is young that you will use a collar or harness and leash when you leave your house, either for a walk or a ride in the car.
8. If you have brought home a puppy, puppy potty pads can be essential, depending on your housebreaking method. You may just want to train her to go outside from the beginning. I wouldn’t suggest using newspaper, because she may decide to use the newspaper you want to read!

This is a list of some suggested basics.

Until next time, enjoy your new puppy! Mrs. Paws
